Hearing and Beyond is a small organization providing education to deaf and hard of hearing children. Started as a small initiative, they have grown unexpectedly over time as more and more parents brought their children to be registered and receive education from HAB, the only institution who would accept deaf children and provide suitable educational services.
They are currently supporting 26 children, with varying ages between 3 and 17 years old. The centre also provides cooked meals daily to students and hearing aids when necessary, and organize a Summer Camp yearly.
Their work is fundamental for integrating these children as independent members of the community, as well as raise awareness on deafness.
The organization is formed by Mai McCann, the founder and Managing Director, the Office Manager – Sang, and 6 other local staff, mostly teachers. They rely on donations that Mai is collecting from Australia, and receive fees from parents – this is personalised to each family’s possibility, and in line with the education system in Vietnam. They have a very basic accounting systems, working on a spreadsheet in Excel – they have never made a report and don’t have written financial procedures.
