Masaya is a Spanish word for hammock. The founders see the organization as a hammock in the sense that it is as an artistic tool for leisure and games that work well if its network/threads stay together. With that in mind their main objective is to give people a platform to discuss, reflect on issues ranging from architecture, urbanism to building less violent and less oppressive social relationships.
During any ludic or theatrical workshop Masaya take into account different ways to keep audiences engaged and motivated, train the trainers to use participatory methodologies in different contexts, promote opportunities for community integration and encourage citizen participation. Masaya’s work focuses mainly on people living in communities stigmatized as violent. Last year only they organized workshops, street activities and festivals in more than 20 communities in Costa Rica with people of all ages.
