Foundation for Community and Capacity Development (FOCCAD), Nkhotakota, Malawi

FOCCAD is a Malawian NGO supporting marginalised communities in Nkhotakota in central Malawi. They began as a youth led organisation in 2002, bringing together youth from disadvantaged backgrounds to tackle social issues in Malawi. FOCCAD registered as an NGO in 2014. They run community based programmes that address health and nutrition, education, youth development, human rights, economic empowerment and disaster management.

Their educational programme focuses on supporting girls to tackle obstacles to attending school, such as early marriages and pregnancy and poor sanitation provisions. Vocational training for young people, business coaching, a small business incubator and a Village and Loans Savings Scheme help to achieve development and economic independence. FOCCAD also support the wider community with HIV/AIDS testing and counselling, sexual health education and natural disaster response training and food programmes for those affected. All of their programmes are dependent on project funding and partnerships. Health remains their main focus and theme throughout.
