Sustainable Development Institute, Monrovia, Liberia

The Sustainable Development Institute (SDI) works to transform decision-making processes in relation to natural resource management and to promote equity in the sharing of benefits derived from these in Liberia. The organisation’s founder collected extremely hard to get evidence of falsified logging records, illegal logging practices and human rights abuses; these were passed on to the UN Security Council which then banned the export of Liberian timber. Since 2003, when a new government came into power, SDI has been working with the leadership to create sustainable timber policies, improve governance of the forests and benefit sharing with forest communities. SDI’s work has been extremely influential, and they have attracted funding from a wide range of donors.
