One Acre Fund, Kigali, Rwanda

One Acre Fund is a growing social enterprise in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania, that is innovating a new way of helping farm families to achieve their full potential. Instead of giving handouts, it invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain in farm income.

One Acre Fund provides farmers with a "service bundle" that includes education, finance, seed and fertilizer, and market facilitation.

Their programme has had positive impact; having weighed thousands of harvests and they have found 50-100% average gain in farm income per acre.

They are also funded by the Whole Planet Foundation (WFP). The WPF chose to support them because in East Africa especially with a very saturated microfinance sector, and with clients seeking out (and often defaulting on) multiple loans, One Acre Fund’s model of giving out loans in kind has been very successful.
