Chumkriel Language School (CLS), Kampot, Cambodia

The Chumkriel Language School is supporting the Chumkriel and neighbouring communities to achieve better futures. Using education and training they are equipping children and adults with the life skills to benefit themselves and their communities. CLS began in 2005 in a small classroom teaching English. Today they are providing an extensive curriculum from their purpose built learning centre, which teaches around 120 primary school children each day. Some classes are also available to adults and older children, with 600 students attending their evening English classes across 2 campuses. The classes are designed to enhance the government school curriculum, they include English, computer, sport and agriculture.

The produce from their agriculture project supplies a soup kitchen to support the poorer families in the community. They also provide educational supplies, uniforms and help with school fees to enable children to stay in mainstream schools. A project in the poorer Salt Fields provides free transport to and from school and a shelter building project (in partnership with Habitat for Humanity) builds homes and toilets, on the condition that parents keep their children in school. CLS are also supporting local libraries to increase community access and improve reading and literacy rates. They also have grand plans for 2020, subject to funding, for water storage, a football pitch, solar energy, classroom and garden improvements and additional computers and iPads.
