English in Mind Institute (EIM) is a non-profit, adult English program. Although started by an NGO (International Disaster Volunteers) in the aftermath of the earthquake, EIM is now a Haitian led, Haitian taught, and Haitian administered operation. The demand for English in Haiti, especially in Port-au-Prince, is overwhelming. Knowing English greatly improves chances of finding long-term, meaningful employment. More than two thirds of Haitians lack formal employment, and more than 50% of the population live on around $4 a day.
Without employment, those living in poverty have little chance to better themselves. Yet, not only are there jobs available in Haiti, there is actually a shortage of skilled labour. English speakers can find work in hotels, restaurants, offices, and attain university scholarships. With the help of EIM, students are becoming qualified for these positions. EIM offer bi-weekly classes to 230 students and follow a Cambridge University English syllabus complete with internationally recognised exams. Along with lower levels, they are one of the only institutes in Haiti to offer two advanced levels and also sponsor graduates to take the TOEFL exam.
Haiti is one of the countries with most need of relief and development support. Though many NGOs are operating in the region the experience is still immersive and the need great. For this assignment French won’t be needed but your knowledge of the language would be an asset for after work activities.
