Caminhos, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Caminhos is an organization focused on addressing the social inequalities that affect the lives of Brazilians every day, striving to promote education and maximizing the potential of underprivileged children and teens from Rio de Janeiro’s Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo communities.

It consists in entities, one commercial and one social:

  • Caminhos Language School – offers Portuguese language classes to international students, providing also accommodation options, adventure tours, cultural activities and visa and consultancy services. This is a for-profit company that supports the social programmes of the organization.
  • Mais Caminhos – is the social programme supported by the Caminhos Language school, providing educational and cultural activities for underprivileged children and teens from Rio’s favelas. They currently have 40 children and young adults in their educational programmes, supporting them to learn how to read, write, speak English, get involved in cultural activities or international exchanges. The 2 main long term activities consist in the Complementary Education Programme – a yearly course for children aged 8-12 from the favelas Pavão-Pavãozinho and Cantagalo, providing lessons of English, Social-emotional learning (Positive Discipline) and Creativity (for instance theatre, sports, games or any other physical activity), aimed at developing children’s academic and life skills; and the Family Programme – financially aiding the entire family of the beneficiaries: helping them pay their bills, find jobs or obtain a good education.
