Home Leone, Freetown, Sierra Leone

Home Leone was established by Nigel Hyde in response to the poverty he experienced whilst travelling in Sierra Leone.

The slum dwellers in Freetown lived in very squalid conditions, and it appeared that there was little being done by the government to improve their welfare. Home Leone’s mission is to build homes, sustainable businesses and community infrastructure whilst delivering the training to enable beneficiaries to make the most of their opportunities.

Vision: to see thousands of people rescued from slums, living in quality homes in vibrant sustainable communities.
Home Leone’s primary task is to impact the nation of Sierra Leone, one of the poorest countries on earth. It will bring opportunity and life change to thousands of people. It is at the core of our values to help some of those who have least, who live in homes where opportunity is limited and death comes early. Sierra Leone’s challenges are exacerbated by the 2014 Ebola outbreak, demanding the action herein. This is a remarkable charity. It’s delivering a landmark development enabling a new movement, leaving a legacy of rescued and transformed lives.

Mission:
  • To build homes, sustainable businesses and community infrastructure whilst delivering the training to enable beneficiaries to make the most of their opportunities. To see the model replicated by others.
  • We aim to relocate thousands of people from devastating conditions of Sierra Leone’s slums by building at least 1,000 new low cost (circa £5,000) homes. HL aim to radically improve lives, and provide hope and opportunity in a nation facing so many challenges.
  • Corporate teams work alongside local people as part of their CSR programmes. Together they are on a journey of self-discovery and team-building that helps the world’s poorest, effecting real and transformative life.

Destiny's Village
Through their first project, Destiny’s Village, they are hoping to relocate 2000 people from the Freetown’s slums. Destiny’s Village will not only contain home, but will have other infrastructure/amenities to enable dwellers to receive education, healthcare, and the means to earn an sustainable income.
