Chimpembere Community Development Organisation (CCDO), Thyolo district, Malawi

Chimpembere is a community based organisation, founded in 2000 and working in Southern Malawi.

With the far reaching vision of a community free from abject poverty, they focus their interventions on serving the needs of disadvantaged women, children and youth through community development projects.

Like most CBOs, CCDO's running projects at any given time are dependent on funding.

They are currently running two donor-supported projects:

  • Accelerating Children's HIV/AIDS Treatment Initiative (ACT): identifying and supporting children of HIV positive parents, to both prevent undiagnosed transmissions of the disease and reduce mortality rates. The project also introduces income generating activities for the families affected, such as a solar energy borehole for irrigation farming and poultry production. The increased income enables them to access more nutritious diets which are so key to their ongoing healthcare. This project is in partnership with ViiV Health Care and has helped 21,000 beneficiaries as of December 2018.
  • Reducing Early Marriages and Gender Based Violence: tackling high gender inequality in Thyolo district through measures to reduce early marriages and pregnancies which disrupts schooling. This puts women at a disadvantage, leaving them subject to poverty, poor health and violation of their rights. This project educates teenage girls and young women about their rights, opportunities and risks and sensitises the traditional authority structures to inspire reform. This project is in partnership with Rise-Up International.
