Tiny Totos is a Kenyan Social Enterprise promoting quality early childhood care. They are supporting small day-care businesses servicing marginalised and low-income families in Nairobi and aiming to install an environment that is safe, stimulating, profitable and affordable. Their approach has been to build a replicable model to improve the quality of these day-care providers. They are registered as a private company, advising and financing small businesses through low interest loans and building capacity in strategy, technology, field systems and operational reach. The day-care centres pay a membership fee and in return have access to training and loans, a connection to a wider network and the sale of key materials and stock at a wholesale price. This operating model is attracting attention from big development funders, with plans to roll it out in other locations and countries. Tiny Totos are also now creating a mobile app which will serve as a field reporting tool for staff, a business dashboard for the centres, and eventually a source of information for parents about individual day-care providers.
