Finance expertise supporting global impact

AfID supports non-profit organisations around the world by connecting them with experienced finance professionals who provide both pro bono and professional support.

Assignments may range from short-term technical assistance lasting a few weeks to longer volunteer placements of up to 12 months, or support with recruiting permanent finance staff.

Since its inception, AfID has arranged assignments for more than 1,800 accountants, providing over 350,000 hours of support to 500+ partner organisations in 57 countries.

Who we work with

Our partners include small grassroots NGOs, social enterprises, and larger international charities working to address poverty and inequality in their communities.

Their work spans a wide range of areas including:

  • microfinance and livelihoods programmes
  • local enterprise and economic development initiatives
  • rural and agricultural cooperatives
  • education, schools and vocational training programmes
  • conservation and environmental protection projects
  • health and community development initiatives
  • organisations supporting vulnerable children and young people

We work with organisations at different stages of financial development, from those with no formal accounting systems to more established organisations with full-time finance teams.

Our aim is to strengthen financial management capacity so organisations can operate more effectively and sustainably.

Our Services

AfID offers a range of services designed to give organisations access to the finance expertise they need, at the right scale and cost.

1. Finance Recruitment (UK and International)

AfID recruits experienced finance professionals for permanent, fixed-term, interim and project-based roles in both the UK and overseas.

Roles commonly include senior finance leadership, donor compliance specialists, finance managers, management accountants, and audit or risk professionals.

2. Pro Bono Volunteer Support

AfID provides time-bound pro bono technical assistance placements delivered by experienced finance professionals. These assignments help charities, NGOs and social enterprises strengthen financial management, systems and long-term sustainability.

Support can be delivered in two ways depending on the needs and capacity of the organisation.

In-Person Volunteer Support

Short in-country assignments delivered by experienced finance professionals working directly alongside your team. These placements typically last between 2-8 weeks and focus on providing practical, hands-on support to strengthen financial systems, reporting and internal capacity.

Remote Volunteer Support

Flexible remote technical assistance delivered by experienced finance professionals over a longer period. Volunteers typically provide a small number of hours each week, working with organisations through email, phone and video conferencing.

This format enables organisations anywhere in the world to access specialist finance expertise without the need for travel.

3. Pro Bono Financial Reviews

Short, structured reviews designed to strengthen financial sustainability, systems and controls.

These include:

Financial Sustainability Reviews focused on long-term financial resilience

Finance Health Checks reviewing financial systems, processes and controls

4. Trustee and Treasurer Appointments

AfID supports charities to recruit skilled Finance Trustees and Treasurers from our network of over 10,000 qualified accountants.

This service helps boards secure strong financial oversight and governance expertise.

5. Annual Mentorship Programme

A light-touch mentorship programme providing access to an experienced finance professional who can act as a strategic sounding board for your finance team.

Mentorship is typically delivered over 12 months with flexible support available when needed.
