About AfID

Accounting for International Development links financial expertise with meaningful social impact.

Since 2009, AfID has connected qualified accountants and finance professionals with charities, NGOs and non-profit organisations around the world, helping them strengthen financial management, improve reporting, build confidence and deliver more sustainable programmes for the communities they serve.

Our work began with international volunteer assignments, placing accountants with charities and grassroots organisations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Today, AfID provides a wider range of specialist support to the non-profit sector, including pro bono technical assistance, UK-based and remote volunteer placements, permanent and contract recruitment, consultancy support, and our Senior Leadership Mentorship Programme for charity and NGO leaders.

We work with a broad mix of partners, from international NGOs to community-based organisations such as street child centres, hospitals, microfinance programmes, conservation projects, women’s empowerment initiatives, schools and local development organisations. Many are doing extraordinary work to tackle poverty, inequality and environmental challenges, but have limited access to the finance skills, systems and strategic support they need to grow with confidence.

The focus of every AfID assignment or partnership is long-term capacity building. Whether through a volunteer accountant strengthening internal controls, a specialist finance professional joining an NGO in a senior role, or an experienced mentor supporting a CEO, CFO or Finance Director, our aim is to help organisations build the financial resilience, transparency and leadership capacity needed to maximise their impact.

AfID also supports finance professionals who want to develop purposeful careers in the charity and international development sectors. More than 20% of AfID volunteers have gone on to work full-time in the non-profit sector, and many others continue to contribute their skills through volunteering, mentoring, trustee roles and specialist advisory work.

To date, AfID has supported over 500 charities and non-profit organisations in 57 countries, placing more than 1,250 volunteer accountants and delivering over 250,000 hours of pro bono financial management coaching — equivalent to more than £10 million worth of professional services.

Through our unique global network of accountants, finance leaders and non-profit specialists, AfID continues to help charities access the skills they need, while giving finance professionals the opportunity to use their expertise for lasting social impact.
