Our partner works in partnership with the Zambian Government to protect Kasanka National Park's environment, its wildlife and natural resources. They aim to both restore and secure the park's biodiversity and to grow it as a sustainable and internationally renowned tourist destination.

 

You will begin with an internal review of their existing financial procedures, systems and controls; you will be making and starting to implement your recommendations for best practice. You will be assessing the capacity and skills of the team, role allocation and organisational risk. You will be updating their financial procedures manual and training the team the continue any new procedures introduced. Your training will include daily finance management and bookkeeping tasks and higher level management responsibilities and financial/strategic planning and oversight.

Our partner focuses on sexual reproductive health and rights: they strive to raise awareness and empower people with knowledge, information and access to quality services. Their current projects include educating on key health topics and nutrition and raising awareness for their target groups: mothers, girls and youth.

 

You will begin with an internal review of their current financial procedures, systems and controls. You will be assessing the capacity and resources of the team and organisation and making recommendations for best practice. You will be improving and introducing new procedures as needed to further strengthen and formalise their structure, training staff to build their capacity. They have a financial procedures manual but would like you to review and update this. They are using QuickBooks and excel and would like further training on QuickBooks to best utilise the system.

 

As our partner attract more and larger donors, they need help understanding and adhering to the reporting requirements, which will become increasingly complex. They would also like to demonstrate a robust and transparent system which meets international compliance to help them attract more funding. They would also like you to create better payroll procedures for both core and project staff.

Our partner provides training for small family farmers on beekeeping techniques, queen bee rearing, and safe and clean honey extraction. The farmers are then provided assistance with bottling and selling the honey. They currently only sell the honey locally, but the co-founders aim to bring it to an international market within Asia in the near future.

 

You will:

  • Review and build a sound accounting system, looking at strengthening controls, ensuring there is proper cash management (including setting up cash and bank reconciliations). Part of this would also entail assessing the Excel sheets, and review whether they should move back to using Quickbooks. For both, help them develop a chart of accounts, and proper classification of income and expenses.
  • Support in building financial management tools – organisational budget, monthly management accounts, cash position and cashflow forecast.

This is really well-rounded placement offering an individual the opportunity to develop accounting controls & processes. Please note, that as the organisation is establishing its operations, it is working as a start-up organisation and will require the volunteer to be independent, hands on and able to really understand the context in which the organisation is operating when establishing an accounting & financial management system.

NGO serving members in rural areas to save and access small loans

Our partner began as a collection of Village Saving and Loan Associations in and around Bong County, serving members in rural areas to save and access small loans. To date there are about 90 different schemes supporting local communities, to the number of 2700 members. From 2017 they started to introduce a more formal structure to offer a wider support.

 

You will begin with a review of their existing finance procedures, systems and controls. You will be making and implementing recommendations for best practice, taking into account the resources and capacity of the team. You will be working in the main hub with the full time Finance Officer and part time Finance Support. The Finance Officer has a diploma in accounting and the Finance Support is currently studying accountancy. You will be reviewing their capacity and providing coaching as necessary.

Our partner also requested support to establish a robust and user friendly system for their new credit union scheme. They do not feel they currently have the knowledge and capacity to manage multi donors and funds and would like fund management training. They would also like to introduce stronger reporting and budgeting procedures. They are currently registering the credit union, ready for launch at the end of the year. For the cooperative they would like a review of the system and an introduction of better production, distribution and tracking procedures.

Charity supporting Project-Based Learning in Brazilian schools

Our parter encourages teachers in Brazil to develop and deliver educational projects and project-based learning practices in their classrooms. In doing so, they hope to create environments where children can meet their full potential, supporting their teachers and wider society to achieve key educational goals. 

 

The organisation is quite young and small in size and while they have complete financial records, their system is still basic.

You will begin with a review of their current financial procedures, controls and system. You will be reviewing staff capacity and resources and making recommendations for best practice that are appropriate to their need and increase efficiency and are appropriate to their need. In addition to a review on their control environment and accounting practices, they would like a volunteer to support them in preparing their financial statements, preparing for an external audit, and creating an organisational budget and buget monitoring tools.

This is an excellent placement and opportunity for an accountant to provide all round support to an organisation. 

 

Trust Channeling Education for Change and Equality

Based in the luscious tea country hills of central Sri Lanka, our partner supports disadvantaged young people from the tea estates with access to education and training. They are seeking a volunteer to review their progress implementing new accounting software and provide further training to local staff.

 

The communities in the tea estates live in impoverished, overcrowded and unsafe conditions and are at risk of malnutrition, violence, high mortality rates and limited access to basic education. The organisation believe that young people should have equal opportunities to develop and succeed, regardless of where they are born, their ethnicity or who their family is and strive to use education as a tool for social change through their education centres and social enterprises.

You will be reviewing their progress with the new systems and procedures, supporting them with any additional training and guidance as needed and ensuring they have the capacity and understanding to maintain this.

Non-governmental organization offering wildlife rescue and release service

Our partner provide a multi-species rescue service which spans country wide, working amidst prominent illegal wildlife trade routes. They run a 24/7 hotline and work with the government on large scale confiscations. Alongside this service they also run a sanctuary for those animals that cannot be released.

 

Our partner would like to build a more robust system for the Trust going forward. You will be conducting an internal review of their existing financial procedures, systems and controls, and you will be making recommendations for best practice and installing a clear and user friendly system, training staff on its use.

Our partner use excel and manual cashbooks; they have purchased QuickBooks but have not managed to switch to the system. You will be assessing and advising on their readiness for either this software or the continued use of excel.  A part-time Accountant based in Vientiane works for them, but has limited capacity: your work will likely involve a couple of trips to support her. You will also be working with the founders who would like training in how to oversee and check finance.

Creative Arts & Brazilian Samba Drumming

Based on the outskirts of the vibrant city of Lagos, this project inspires a sense of community through the celebration of Afro-Brazilian percussion. Their main aim is to provide access to the creative arts and to empower young people to become agents for change in their communities. 

 

The organisation performs and teaches Brazilian Samba drumming across Nigeria to provide access to the creative arts and to empower young people to become agents for change in their communities. The workshops offer a space to embrace creativity; learn valuable key skills, like leadership, confidence and teamwork; and to grow together. The children and young people who attend their free workshops are from a wide range of social, ethnic and religious backgrounds.

You will be reviewing their progress, providing further training as needed. This placement will be heavy on training to further build their system and capacity to manage it internally.

They have a new Project Coordinator & Logistics Manager who would benefit from some more training in excel. With the wider team you will also be advising on payroll procedures for salaries being paid internationally, creating a financial procedures manual, training staff on how to create annual financial statements and monthly reconciliations.

There is also scope to support with fundraising. While fundraising sits separately to finance, our volunteers can offer assistance by creating budgets and presenting financial information for the fundraising proposals.

NGO promoting multilingualism as a mean of education

Our partner is a young Colombian registered NGO that promotes multilingualism and linguistic diversity as a means of education, social development and positive change in the community.

 

You will begin with an internal review of their accounting procedures, systems and controls, making recommendations for best practice while taking into account the local context, needs, capacity and resources of the local team. You will start implementing the recommendations, in order of priority as decided together with the team, while also providing training to staff.

You will mainly be working with the Director, who is speaking fluent English and would benefit from your support in financial planning, developing a sustainability analysis, understanding service pricing and financial benchmarking. They have 2 part-time staff working on finance, one accountant that does their tax returns to the Government and a bookkeeper. They don't speak English but the director will be available to arrange some meetings and translate for you, to make sure your recommendations are understood and protocols followed as agreed.

Organization preserving indigenous culture, history and heritage

Our partner preserves the culture, history and heritage of the Garifuna people (Garinagu), indigenous to Belize and Central America. They advocate for their rights and opportunities and promote inter-racial harmony within Belize. 

 

You will begin with an internal review of their existing financial procedures, systems and controls. You will be making recommendations for best practice that are appropriate to the resources and capacity of the team, starting to implement some of these and providing training so staff can maintain the changes. You will also be creating a financial procedures manual to accurately document their new system. They are submitting their documents for the 2018 audit at the end of May and have outstanding changes to implement form the 2017 audit report.

Their Office Manager is keeping basic records on excel and QuickBooks which are sent to an external accountant for preparation. The President has an accounting background but does not have the time to spend on finance, she has given some training to the Office Manager but he will benefit from further coaching to build his capacity. You will also be working with the Treasurer who works part time.

Charitable Trust providing equal opportunities to young people

Our partner is a Charitable Trust committed to providing equal opportunities to all young people regardless of background. Their primary beneficiary are those from disadvantaged backgrounds. They offer mentoring to empower and equip youth with life skills and to prepare them for higher education.

 

You will begin with a financial health check of their procedures, systems and controls. You will be reviewing their financial sustainability and will be making recommendations for best practice, starting to implement these and providing training as needed. They are looking to create a financial plan for the next 10 years and would like you to take a leading role on this.

You will also be assisting with the new model they are developing which will support and advise a network of NGOs who want to deliver mentoring programmes. This model will engage their knowledge, experience, technology, training and curriculum. They need your help to cost and plan this new programme.

You will begin with a review of their existing financial procedures, systems and controls. You will be making recommendations for best practice, appropriate to their resources and capacity. They started using QuickBooks online but employees have received little training on it. They would like to learn how to utilise its functions on stock and inventory. They would also like to start producing financial monthly reporting, including budget vs actual and donor reporting. You may also provide some coaching to the Finance Manager to boost his skills and help to streamline his work.

Organization helping families affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty

Our partner helps children and families affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty, providing educational, social and psychosocial support and through it changing lives.

 

You will begin with an internal review of their accounting procedures, systems and controls, making recommendations for best practice while taking into account the local context, needs, capacity and resources of the local team. You will start implementing the recommendations, in order of priority as decided together with the team, while also providing training to staff.

There are 2 sets of accounts - one for the farm and children’s home and another for the school - both managed by the same person, who is using Excel and would benefit from the review, training and further recommendations of a qualified and experienced accountant, to streamline the processes and make it more efficient. Our partner has also requested your support on budgeting.

You will also be working with their bookkeeper who has been helping our partner remotely by managing the QuickBooks account. Her current activities throughout the year cover: reconciling Bank Statements, reconciling Accounts Receivable, updating sponsorship records, preparing the Annual Budget for 2019, communication and following up on outstanding payments. She would benefit from your support in streamlining the accounts and further training in QuickBooks and budgeting. 

NGO empowering women and girls to manage their own reproductive health

Our partner educates and empowers women and girls to manage their own reproductive health. In Kenya they produce and sell sanitary products, disseminate key health education, and lead on advocacy and research efforts to enact change. They aim to help girls transition safely through adolescence with the right to make informed decisions about their own health.

 

They have requested support with a fresh internal audit of financial procedures, systems and controls, making recommendations for best practice; reviewing and updating their financial procedures manual; ensuring QuickBooks was migrated properly; and evaluating actuals and supporting ED and CEO to create and upload budgets into the new QuickBooks for regular budget vs actual analysis.

You will also be examining sales data collection and how this is used in management and board reporting, decision making and how it can inform social impact outcomes. You will be evaluating the non-profit costs and multi-country strategies; leading on the creation of business model scenarios for a 5 year strategy; preparing data for investment proposals; and evaluating sales target vs actual data. 

This is a big scope of work. You will be working closely with the finance and management team to identify a priority order and will work through this list as time allows. Depending on where they have got to with finance recruitment, you may also be helping with this process to hire and onboard the new team.

Our partner is social enterprise supporting entrepreneurs in Asia, they want to facilitate the flow of capitol to social organisations to help them scale up their social and environmental impact. Their beneficiaries are organisations operating in South East Asia who are providing access to clean energy, clean water and improved sanitation for the benefit of low income and marginalised communities.

 

Our partner has been through recent staff changes in the last year, including the departure of their Finance Director and Finance Officer. There is currently one member of staff managing their finance function and they are actively recruiting to rebuild the team. The current Executive Director has also newly joined: she comes from a more traditional banking background and since arriving has identified many gaps and weaknesses in their systems.

You will be beginning with an financial health check, reviewing current procedures, controls and systems and making recommendations for best practice. They would also like to migrate to QuickBooks online which they feel would improve efficiency and reduce manual input and financial risk.
