UGANDA (Kampala) | Transforming Lives with Clean Water, Improved Hygiene and Sanitation

Dynamic Accountant required to support charity organisation aimed at changing lives with clean water for the 9.2 million people who go without every day

Start: Oct - Jan     Assignment length: 3+ months     Resources: ALL Costs Covered

With 9.2 million people lacking access to safe drinking water and 24 million having no adequate sanitation – the need for support in this matter is critical. Over 12,000 children die of diarrhoea every year in Uganda, which is an unimaginable horror for most people. It is for this reason that there is such a strong need for our partner’s work – they are not just transforming lives, they’re saving them.

Through a two-pronged approach, our partner utilises the power of advocacy to influence policy and decision makers in order to raise further awareness of the crisis that has gripped Uganda. They also work to provide part of the solution through delivering clean, sanitised water and provide hygienic sanitation facilities to fight back against the water-borne diseases that have plagued Uganda in the past. Our partner has been working in Uganda for nearly 3 decades and has an unprecedented level of expertise on this matter, but they need support not just from the public, but presently from an accountant.

As you would be the first AfID volunteer with this organisation, your role would be akin to undertaking an internal audit; assessing the financial controls and processes whilst making alterations as you see fit. It will be up to you to oversee the general day-to-day accounting processes and the end of month reports. The need for a dedicated volunteer has never been greater, you would be working an auditor to assess the budgets and the current accounting procedures, but there will also be a chance for you to help with a great deal of staff training.

This is a great chance to work with a prestigious international charity and would be a brilliant first step for someone looking to forge a career in the international development sector. If you have the accounting skills necessary to support this fantastic organisation then why not escape the office and lend a hand to those who need it most. Access to water is a basic human right, but also a basic human need – will you be the one to help the people of Uganda?

Please note that overseas assignments, in this case Uganda, will incur a placement fee as per the AfID Structured Volunteer Programme fee scale (see website for more details).
